Dear Family,
The guy we were hoping to baptize this week end didn't get baptized when some more concerns arose. There is just some stuff that he needs to work through and there isn't much we can do to help. He knows the doctrine, he just needs to apply it. Mary Owen, the partmemeber is still set on being baptized August 28th, so we are really excited for her. The other Elders in the district found a really cool family. When they first approached them the family told them that they were not interested because the last missionaries they talked to told them they were going to hell if they didn't get baptized and that they can't have crosses in their house otherwise they are worshipping the devil. The same day my companion and I met a guy who said that some guys came to his house a few years ago and told him that Mormons worshipped Adam as a God and that Mormons think they can become Gods. Pretty crazy!! From his description of the guys they were not missionaries, so I don't know who it would have been. This week I had an exchange with one of the Zone Leaders, Elder Smart, who came down to Sumter from Florence. He is a really cool guy and he really helped firm up some of our investigators for baptism.
This week we had a ton of rain, we got drenched really good a few times. My shoes just now dried out. A few days ago we were looking for a part member family when we knocked into another family in the area that invited us on in. We were so excited to meet such nice people and we were really hoping to baptize this wonderful family. Then we saw a picture of the Salt Lake temple on the mantle and my companion whispered to me, "Crap, they're members!" hahaha They were a nice family any way. They had a friend over that was excommunicated and we invited him to take steps to rejoin the church. We also invited the family to attend and invite friends to a church movie night we are having August 29 at 6:30pm. We are going to be showing Joseph Smith Prophet of the Restoration. Its a really cool movie! While at the member's house I got to try home made pickled figs! They were amazing! I had never known what figs looked like up until then.
Well, that about sums up my week!
I love you all and hope you stay out of trouble!
Love,
Elder Calvin Smith
