Elder Calvin B. Smith enters the Missionary Training Center July 1, 2009

Early June 30, 2009 the Smith family started their trip to the Missionary Training Center. A stop was made in Hurricane Utah to drop off Cameron and Candace at Sheryl's cousin's place (Dave & Heather's) so they could play, horseback ride, and ride the 4-wheeler. By evening Curtis, Sheryl, and Calvin arrived at Curtis's brother's house (Bryan & Cheryl's) in Highland Utah. The next morning they were up and on to Provo Utah where they stopped by the BYU book store then met Sheryl's sister (Brenda) for lunch at Utah Valley Hospital. Calvin was to report to the MTC at 1:pm. At 12:30 Curtis, Sheryl, and Calvin parked at the parking lot across from the MTC. Took pictures, talked, then got back in the car. Drove into the MTC parking lot. At the first stop an older missionary asked if Calvin had been sick during the last two days. Next stop a younger missionary stopped them. Curtis asked if it was too late to change their mind. The young missionary looked a little perplexed then said it would be a long ways to back up the car to leave. So they were told to proceed to a certain parking stall. At the parking stall there was an older sister missionary to give the mom (Sheryl) information. Two young elders helped unload Calvin's luggage. This was followed by a third elder taking Sheryl's camera to take one last picture (shown in this posting). Hugs were exchanged, then Curtis and Sheryl drove off crying all the way back to the BYU book store so Sheryl could send Calvin a little care-package. It wasn't as bad as it could of been....dropping Calvin off at the curb is a lot better than sitting in an hour long meeting then hearing...."missionaries exit this door, all others out this other door."

  1. Cool. Thanks for the update; I look forward to following the blog. I'm sorry you didn't have a chance to do the missionary meeting; we actually really enjoyed that. It seems that dropping off at the curb is so anticlimactic after all these many years of prep! :-)
